If there is "honest" knowledge, then there should be nothing wrong with making mistakes - so long as due diligence has gone into researching what you choose to do which is our duty of care to society.
So if we choose to do something novel after the above and learn that it is detrimental to society we also have a social responsibility to record that so it may be included into social knowledge.
This way we can minimize the repetition of mistakes.
Part of our social responsibility is that we do not degrade our environment knowingly to the detriment of future generations - i.e. we do not profit at the expense of future generations.
